Romania's PSD, AUR to Submit Joint Censure Motion Against Government

(MENAFN) Two of Romania's major political parties moved Monday to bring down the government of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, announcing a joint motion of censure that marks a dramatic escalation of the country's deepening political crisis, a broadcaster reported.

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) confirmed they would jointly submit the motion, with PSD leadership voting unanimously in favor of the move — days after the Social Democrats pulled out of the ruling coalition and their ministers began stepping down from their posts.

PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu framed the initiative as a parliamentary maneuver to unseat the current executive, while carefully distancing his party from any future coalition arrangement with AUR should the motion prevail.

"I brought it to the attention of colleagues, not only in the office, but also all the PSD branch presidents, the decision was whether or not to sign this motion, this parliamentary initiative. It is normal for us to have a political decision," Grindeanu told reporters.

Prime Minister Bolojan fired back, accusing PSD of deliberately destabilizing the government without putting forward any credible alternative. He insisted that any effort to topple the executive must be backed by a clear parliamentary majority and a concrete proposal for new leadership — conditions he suggested the opposition had yet to meet.

Adding a further dimension to the unfolding crisis, Kelemen Hunor, leader of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania, suggested that a parliamentary majority assembled to pass the motion could outlast the vote itself, potentially laying the groundwork for an entirely new governing arrangement.

Should the motion secure enough votes, the Bolojan government would fall — triggering a fresh round of coalition negotiations at a moment of acute political uncertainty in Bucharest.
